The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley © Dial Books, 2015
Ada is a 10 year old girl that has never set one foot out of her apartment. She was raised by her cruel mother who was too humiliated by Ada to let her outside as Ada has a deformed foot that has always deeply ashamed her mother. So when her little brother Jaime has to get shipped out of London to escape the War, Ada sneaks out and joins him.
Ada and Jaime are forced to live with Susan Smith, who seemed to be a cranky old woman. At Susan’s home, Ada has to teach herself how to read, ride a pony and watch for any suspicious German spies. She eventually begins to trust her foster mother, and Susan begins to love the two children. But in the end will the bond between them be enough to get them through wartime?
