Small Minli lives in the Valley of the Fruitless Mountain, where she and her parents work very hard spending their whole day in the fields. At night, Minli listens to her fathers tales about the old Man Of The Moon who knows the answers to anything and everything. She sets out on a quest to find the Old Man Of The Moon who she knows will tell her how she can bring good fortune to the family. Along the way she meets many magical creatures, a powerful king, a talking fish, and a dragon that cannot fly.
